#23: How to speak -7

    There is so many English conversation school in Japan, and I do not know what is going on in these schools. If we go to these kind of schools, can we start speaking our second language we learn?
    In my opinion, it is important how we can deal with these kind of schools. If we have already started speaking our second language, and we want to speak it more fluently, maybe these schools can help us. However if we don't even start speaking our second language, there is no need to go to these kind of schools.
    First, if we want to start speaking our second language, we need to speak a lot, but the amount of these kind of conversation practice is not enough for us to start talking. I have talked with the one who can speak English several times when I had not started speaking yet, and I thought at that time, that I could not speak English on this method.

    I agree with you on this point. Later I will refer to it, but in addition to this linking, we should learn reduction, contraction, deletion,  assimilation, and so on. And in my opinion, we Japanese should definitely learn the difference of pronunciation, especially v and b, l and r, ɑ and ə and ˄ and ӕ, І and і. Of course we can learn these things for free on the Internet like You Tube.

#22: How to speak -6

    About recitation, I cannot tell whether the recitation is useful or not. When I record the video of Minecraft, I try to learn by heart one or two sentences from the videos of Minecraft gaming on You Tube. Basically I think it is not so effective on our speaking to learn by heart something and recite it because I feel the speaking by recitation is not the same as the natural speaking. When I record a video, I can feel the differences between the two speakings.
    In my opinion, it is not very important whether we recite or not. There is not so much differences. So I remember this sentence, which is "repetition is absolutely incapable of accounting for learning".

    This kind of way of saying is a little bit tricky, I think, because we wonder how you can tell the human ability of language.
    When I read these kind of books, which is about how to learn English, I often see these kind of sentences, but I always think "how do you know it! "
    However, if this writer says "My listening ability improved when I came to pronounce English properly." I can say "A-ha!" This is because I have also the feeling that my listening ability has improved when I had done the practice of reading aloud, repeating, shadowing, and speaking. In my opinion, this do not have to do with the pronunciation, but with whether we speak the language or not.

#21: How to speak -5

    Until I started speaking English, which was 3 months ago, I avoid reading as possible as I can. This is because I had the habit of translating especially when I read something, so I needed to avoid the letters.
    But since I do not have the habit and what is more important I can start talking, I have begun to read a book and that read a book aloud.
    As I begun to read aloud only recently, I can't tell whether this practice is useful or not, but maybe if we want to expand our vocabulary, reading aloud is useful I think.
    In my opinion, we should not read something unless we have listened a lot, can pronounce relatively correctly, avoid translating and start talking.
    Anyway, I can not talk about many things on this practice but at least I can say this. Even if you read something or read aloud something, you never start speaking.

    I agree with you on these points. It is difficult for Japanese people who are accustomed to what we call "JUKEN EIGO" to get rid of the habit of translating. In my opinion, to remove the habit we try not to think about the meanings because when we think about the meanings we try to translate the English language into Japanese. Actually I had a lot of difficulty getting rid of this habit but now I do not have it at all.

#20: How to speak -4

    The phrase "Repeat after me" is sometimes said by English teacher, and this repeating practice is useful for not only the improvement of our accent, rhythm, and intonation, but also our pronunciation. In this sense, I guess Repeating practice is superior to the Shadowing practice.
    I have been doing this practice. Especially I like repeating short sentences and words. Maybe I will write about how to increase our vocabulary but repeating words list one by one is one of my vocabulary building method.
    Repeating practice is useful especially for pronunciation practice like using IPA because being different for shadowing practice, we can make sure our voice. But we should remember one thing. We never start to speak our second language, no matter how much we repeat the language. Like shadowing, repeating practice is just a voice training. In other words this is something like a passive speaking I think. If we want to start speaking, we need active speaking training.

    I don't agree with you on this book title, but I agree with you on the sentences which I quote. It may be surprising to the rest of the Japanese but it seems to be true that most of us Japanese people cannot speak English at all even after 6 years education program. In my point of view, most of the English teachers in Japan cannot speak English fluently.
    The reason is simple. We do not practice speaking or we do not practice speaking appropriately. Repeating, Reading aloud, Shadowing, Recitation is not the speaking practice but voice training. And even these voice trainings are not done in Japanese school sufficiently.

#19: How to speak -3

    Shadowing is useful for our accent, rhythm, and intonation practice but it is not useful for our pronunciation. If we want to improve our pronunciation, we should learn Phonics or IPA.
    Why is the shadowing practice not useful for our pronunciation.
    One reason is that it is difficult to listen to the sounds we hear correctly because our voice disturbs our hearing sounds. Another reason is that in turn it is also difficult to check our own pronunciation because the sounds we hear disturbs our voice. And I think it is most important but we must make sure our mouth shape in our pronunciation practice while in the shadowing practice it is difficult to check our mouth shape.
    So if we want to improve our pronunciation, we should learn Phonics or IPA.     I agree with you on this point. If we do not enjoy our language learning, we can never learn the language. Although we tend to think little of this point, enjoying the language learning is more important than we expected. In my opinion, whether we are able to recognize the thing we learn as a language or not depends on whether we can enjoy our language learning.

#18: How to speak -2

    Shadowing, in which practice you repeat the sounds you hear in the few seconds later, is not speaking practice but something like a voice training. We can improve our accent, rhythm, and intonation by the practice but we cannot start speaking our second language no matter how much time we spend on it.
    When I did this practice, I had 4 steps as follows. The point is that I combined this practice with the practice of repeating and reading aloud.

1. Shadowing two times at least.(before I did this first step, I listened a lot and got used to the sounds.)
2. Repeating sentence one by one.
3. Reading aloud a passage(about 100 ~ 200 words) two or three times and check the accent, rhythm, and intonation. When we check the accent, rhythm, and intonation, we would be better to do the shadowing if necessary.
4. Reading aloud once again as a finish.

    I agree with you on this point. Whether it is English →Japanese or Japanese →English, we would be better to avoid translation as possible as we can.
    However, it is difficult to speak or write the meaning itself, because in general the meanings in our mind have almost turned into our native language. Therefore if we try to speak or write the meaning itself we cannot avoid translating. So in my opinion I guess it is important that we do not even think about the meaning. Just speak or just write without thinking about the meanings.

#17: How to speak -1

    As a speaking practice, at least as a speaking practice that I had thought it was, I will list some methods.

・Shadowing
・Repeating
・Reading Aloud
・Reciting
・Conversation

    In my opinion, these practice are not the speaking practice essentially. At least I have not become to be able to speak English at all. These practice are not the speaking practice but the practice of something like a voice training. Even if it is the practice making conversation with some native speaker, it could not be the speaking practice unless we get the same occasion as a child.
    I will write the merit and demerit of these practices on the following posts.

    I agree with you on this point. When I learn vocabulary, I make it rule to take much time because if we try to learn vocabulary without taking enough time we come to learn these by heart. But learning something by heart is not appropriate for our language learning because once we retrieve some words you have learned by heart it takes time to do it.
    On the other hand, if we learn vocabulary without learning by heart, we need to listen a lot, we need to read many books, or in short we need a lot of exposure to the language. If we don't have a lot of exposure, we will miss the opportunity to see the words or phrase or phrasal verb or else before we forget about these and then we will fail to learn the vocabulary.
